Just in time...

Wisconsin Sunset 9x12 oil on board
Wow! That was a whirlwind. I got home late today after my son's swim lesson and gave up trying to paint as I knew the sun would soon set. Just as I was about to give up the ghost, I saw some awesome clouds in the sky. Thinking that the artist police should come and arrest me if I didn't try to capture it, off I went.

20 minutes, #12 brush.

Forest Through The Trees

Forest Through The Trees 8x10 oil on board

Here is a little piece I did yesterday afternoon. I gave myself the assignment of useing a #12 brush for the whole painting. It was more fun than challenging and I love the results. I think that I will use a large brush for all my quick plein air pieces from now on!

Nocturnal Experiment

Au tums Sleep 8x10 oil on board

I decided to go out last night in search of painting subjects. I have been inspired by Marc Hansen's nocturne marathon this month and thought I would go out and brave the darkness. I have done some nocturne pieces before and it always proves to be a fun and educational experience. For this one I drove to the marina and was struck by these two friends, freshly pulled from the lake and awaiting winter storage. I am going to try to improve the lighting on my surface next time so that my values improve. But, all in all I am satisfied with this attempt.

I have been traveling around to many  plein air festivals and competitions this summer and some of the continuing questions I get are "ever do portraits or still lifes?" The answer is YES! I think that it is every serious artist's duty to increase their skill level by being well versed in all forms. So.. I will post some more portraits and studio work to my new site www.jasonprigge.com in the future, and by all means... I do commissions!
Happy Painting Everyone.

Working Big

Silver Creek
oil on canvas
24x28

Those of us who paint outdoors often can sometimes put ourselves in an 8x10 or 9x12 box. I decided after a few semi succesful 16x20's I wanted to go large. Here are the results from this afternoon. I think that it was freeing and dare I say easier painting so large. Big brushes and bold moves. Happy Painting!

The Pleasure of Plein Air

The Mistral
Throughback

Oh the summer has intoxicated me with so many muses!
I haven't posted on this blog since the Cedarburg event. I have been busy working the Plein Air competitions and keeping up with capturing my own neck of the woods. I have had the distinct honor of meeting some wonderful people this summer who also have paint running through there veins. I cannot believe the kindness and comrodery they have shown. I hope that these folks will be in my landscape for a very long time.

I have done well this summer at the competitions but more over I have grown as a painter and a businessman. Here are some of the pieces I have done over the past few months. Enjoy

Cedarburg Plein Air

What a week! Besides a highlight of meeting and talking with an artist I admire - Ken Dewaard - I also sold some pieces! We were permitted to enter two paintings in the main event, in addition to a quick paint and a painting of the Strawberry Festival. Of the four paintings submitted, only one was left for me to pick up. It was a great experience. Here they are:

The Journey Is Ever Changing

Spring Reflections
12x16
oil on board
Late Light
oil on board
8x10

The journey is always fun! Both of these pieces were done without the aid of turps. i left them at home like an idiot. But, like everything else in life it is the challenges that define us. Undaughnted I soldiered on and created two unique paintings with different perspectives of the same farm. I love it when a plan comes together.

Happy Earth Day

Spring Marsh

This is a wonderful little spot I found today. I had music (geese) and a show (mating or fighting geese, it's hard to tell sometimes.)

Rivers Bend

Did this one in about 45 min standing on an old bridge near my house.

Recent Brushstrokes

Spring Bank
8x10
I painted this piece today by the river near my house. I love this park and paint there often.

Radio Sprouts
8x10
oil on board
Sometimes you don't need to look far for subjects. This is my son's wagon with sprouts in egg cartons we are getting ready to plant soon.
Lower Cato Falls
10x14
oil on board
This on I did about 2 weeks ago on the first really nice day of spring. While I was paining a hiker told me that in a few days the river bank would be covered with thousands of garder snakes waking up from the long winter. I didn't go back to check.
Devil's River
10x12
oil on board
I did some studies of this spot at a paintout last year. This is one that I brought out and worked on some more.
The Homestead
oil on canvas
10x12
Once again, I looked no further than my back yard for inspiration.

WEA Paintout at Cedarview

Feeding The Creek
11x14
oil on board
I had to hike about a half mile in the snow to get this one but I think it was worth it.
Evergreen Afternoon
16x20
oil on canvas
After a day of painting I like to do a fast and loose "sketch" this one took a half hour.
Gruppe's Barn
11x14
oil on board
I love painting alongside the road. I actually took off my coat for this one. The colors are a bit intense but so was the experience.
Hillside Thaw
12x12
oil on board
This view is through an empty spot in the evergreens. I loved doing this piece.

Winters Beauty

As winter drudges on, so do I. Although i cannot get down because of the cold and snow as it has a beauty that is as rich as a sun filled summer day. I love the subtle value an hue changes and have no problem finding subjects out my back door. Enjoy

Winter Driveway
11x17
oil on board

hello all! Finally I am posting to the blog. It has been a long winter and I guess that I have been in a psuedo hibernation of late. I have had a few trips to the great ooutdoors painting this winter but most have ended in frustration or near hypothermia. I can't complain though I have such a wonderful view right out my living room window (Winter Driveway) that I am never in need of subjects. Beauty is all around us even in the harshest of climates. I plan to get out more this month, I have my eye on a few subjects I want to capture while the snow is blanketing them.
I am getting work together for two shows this summer and several other opportunities. I will be coming out with dates for some summer workshops I want to do as well as some movement with THE WATERS EDGE ARTIST'S group as well as preparing for that show wich will be this fall. Beauty is all around you if you just open your eyes.
